Bugsier 3
(Built by David Thompson)

The Bugsier 3 is now over 25 years old and is a Graupner Kit of a German Harbour Tug. The model is built at 1:33 scale which makes her 33" long with an 8.5" beam (a good size). The original hull was a Vac Formed type which suffered badly from cracking around the keel after about 12 years so a drastic rebuild was done which involved taking a GRP cast from the hull from which a GRP hull now replaces the old plastic hull. All the fittings are standard Graupner with a working tow hook release fitted. Power is supplied by a 4 off 2 volt 5 amp cyclone batteries which coupled with the monoperm pile motor (3:1 reduction) gives several hours of running of a single charge. A self built electronize speed controller provides the engine control through a 27 meg Futaba 3 channel set. The hull has additional ballast to the stern which helps the 70mm prop to get more 'bite' when stopping / reversing. Going astern is as always with a single prop/rudder a bit of a lottery but I have lengthened the rudder by about 5mm which seems to help.
