Fairmile D. Series of Motor Gun Boats (MGB) and Motor Torpedo Boats (MTB)
(Built by Mick Brown)

The subject of the model is a variant of the Fairmile D. Series of Motor Gun Boats (MGB) and Motor Torpedo Boats (MTB) built during the last World War. The boat N0 5026 was fitted out as Long Range Rescue Craft (LRRC) No 017 for the RAF and was built in March 1945 by William Osbourne Ltd at Littlehampton. The armament was lighter than the MTB's and MGB's and consisted of, Two single 20 mm Oerlikon Mk VII Mountings forward. A twin 20mm Mk IX Mounting aft and 2 twin .303 Vickers MG's. The boats were powered by four Packard 4M-2500 Marine Petrol Engines (100 Octane fuel) driving four propeller shafts. Maximum speed was about 32 Knots.
The RAF boats were fitted with extra fuel tanks, a "Crows Nest", Aircraft type Direction Finder and Scrambling Nets Port and Starboard to aid in the rescue of aircrew ditching at sea and other survivors. The "Scallops" cut out of the Forward Weather Deck show that the Hull was originally laid down as an MTB. (The scallops avoided the Torpedo hitting the edge of the deck when fired!)

Its 43" long with a 9" Beam. It was constructed using the "Lost Shadow" principle and is planked. The power is provided by two Johnson 650 Motors with individual speed controllers. The speed on one motor is about scale speed but with two motors its - in the words of Mick Brown - "Ballistic"!
Mick says the original Boat ended its days as a Cadet HQ
