Moonraker Megayacht
(Built by Paul Rae)

During sea trials off Norway in 1992, Moonraker achieved a speed of 124km/hr making her the fastest Megayacht in the World at that time. The record had previously been held by Octopussy with a top speed of 99km/hr. Both vessels where commissioned by John Staluppi who entrusted the design of Moonraker to Mulder Design of Norway. The vessel was built at the Ulstein Eikefjord Marine Yard, part of the Norwegian consortium ?Norship?. Moonraker cost more than 15 million DM to build and is powered by two MTU diesels and one Textron Lycoming gas turbine driving three Ka Me Wa propulsors. These endow the vessel with a high degree of manoeuvrability, speed and comfort.
Three sister ships based on Moonraker where subsequently commissioned, and the 1:25 scale model described here ?Bonita? was delivered to the Royal Household of Johor in Malaysia in 1995. In the same year the Sultan of Brunei took delivery of the third sister ship ?Teeth?.

Length: Full Size = 36.75m, 1/25 Model = 1.47m,
Beam: Full Size = 7.15m, 1/25 Model = 0.284m,
Drought: Full Size = 1.6m, 1/25 Model = 0.65m,

This Graupner kit has taken nearly 2 years to build on and off and is primarily constructed from ABS plastic, plywood and balsa. The model is propelled by three water jets the two outer ones of which are steer able. The central water jet is fixed and provides additional thrust for sustained high speed cruising. Three speed 700BB turbo 12Volt motors are used. in conjunction with one speed 400 bow thruster motor for increased manoeuvrability. This enables the model to turn within it?s own length. An array of hi-capacity Ni-Cads are used which also power a three tier lighting system, safety relays, stern lights, three electronic speed controllers and a ships horn. Most of the auxiliary systems are powered from a 12v distribution module. Extra additional features can be added at the modeller?s discretion. The model is finished in the livery of ?Bonita? and the colours used were Glacier White and Montreal Blue. At the time of writing the model is still undergoing minor works which will hopefully be finished sometime in the New Year.
