On
the 24th May 1975 Kingsbury Water Park welcomed their very
first visitor. Since then millions of
people have grown up with the park, coming at first with
their parents, then returning again and again with their own
children.
The park has also 'grown up'; from just 2 lakes in 123 acres
to over 30 lakes in 620 acres; from 50,000 visitors in the
first year to over 350,000 today. The transformation from
worked-out gravel sandpits to the beautiful landscaped park
of today is amazing.
Kingsbury
Park Model Boat Club has been as much part of the growing up
as the park itself. Originally founded in 1972 the club has
had it roots firmly fixed to the park since the opening of
the model boat lake in 1975.
Most of the park land is flat and many of the paths are
surfaced, providing easy access for pushchairs, wheelchairs,
children and the elderly. there are also two mobility scooters, available on a free loan scheme
Three bird hides overlook the quiet nature reserve at the
Broomey Croft area of the park. Well over 200 species of
birds have been recorded at the park and it has one of the
largest inland breeding colonies of common terns in the
country.
There
are 13 landscaped fishing lakes within the park, catering
for specialists and beginners alike. 6 Pools can be fished
by purchasing a day ticket, 6 others give the opportunity to
catch specimen size fish by annual permit. Contact The Fisheries for full details of day ticket fishing
and specimen permit fishing at Kingsbury Water Park.
There are 2 children's play areas to visit. There's the
colourful play area by the visitor centre for children up to
the age of 8 and for the more adventurous there's the
new rustic play area at Far Leys. There are also many activities through
out the year aimed at younger children.
The
park also supports cyclists with routes ranging from 4 miles
to 10 miles. Kingsbury Jet Bike Centre, Midlands Powerboat
Racing Club and Tamworth Sailing club also base themselves
at Kingsbury. And if you want caravanning or camping
facilities then Kingsbury have a Camping and Caravanning
Club site, now open all year round.
Along with the Visitor Centre, The Old Barn Coffee Shop and
the Education Centre this surely makes Kingsbury Water Park
a family day out. So all you modellers can keep everybody
happy while you're down by the pool.
