Ever since the first model boats it has always been a great drive for modellers to design and build boats that can travel faster and faster even to the point of breaking world records. This has evolved over the years as the fast growing tethered hydro category of model boating.
Model power boats up to 1920s were run free, to obtain any speed figures even at 25 mph proved to be very difficult, it was much easier and precise to calculate if the boat was tethered to a central pylon on a known line length. The wire length gives a lap distance of 100 metres .The boat is timed over 5 laps to give the speed, The top speeds of a modern hydroplanes are in the region of 135 mph. To see a boat travel 100 metres in less than 2 seconds is a site not to miss.
There are several classes 3.5cc 6cc 10cc 15cc 30cc A class for novice and for flash steam. The flash steam boats have achieved 120 mph an incredible sight to see.
Tethered hydroplanes started running at Kingsbury Water Park in 1990. We have approximately five regattas per year and cater for all classes including beginners see regatta list. This section of the club has had many successes at International and World events.
New comers are always welcome. Please contact the tethered hydro secretary Mr John DeMott for any information related to tethered hydro activities.
